Products description

1987 Europa 28p with horizontal colour shift in a horizontal strip of 5 with sheet margins left and right, in perfect u/m never hinged mint condition. SG 667 var., Mi. 623 var., MW / Hibernian C461a.

While having the appearance of a shift of all colours to the right (except brown), it is actually the brown print which is shifted 7mm to the left. As the perforator appears to have been registered to the brown autotron sheet marking, the stamps were in fact perforated in relation to the brown print, leaving the parts of the design printed in the other colours all to the right, the left stamps without date and the remaining stamps with transposed date.

This issue was printed by Harrison & Son in sheets of 100 stamps divided into "A" and "B" sub-sheets of 50 each. The "A" sheet was recovered by the Post Office and is believed to have been officially destroyed. The "B" sheet was found at a post office by a collector and was broken up in 1987.
This is the only strip of 5 showing the complete shift believed to survive intact.
